Future-Proofing Residential Heat Networks: Performance & Compliance

Posted by Remi Adeleke

We recently hosted our conference Enhancing Efficiency, Assuring Compliance, bringing together industry experts from Switch2 and DESNZ for insightful presentations and panel discussions. The event provided support to Local Authorities and Housing Associations on how to improve heat network efficiency, whilst preparing for compliance with upcoming consumer and technical regulations.

With a focus on compliance and performance improvement, the conference addressed key challenges and solutions for heat network operators. Here are the crucial takeaways that are redefining industry standards.

Stronger Protections for Heat Network Customers

Until now, customers on heat networks have had fewer legal protections than those using traditional gas boilers in their homes. However, upcoming regulations will introduce similar consumer protections, ensuring fairer treatment and transparency in pricing and service standards.

Additionally, new technical standards for heat network design, construction, and operation will soon be in place. This means future residential heat networks will be built to higher efficiency and performance standards, benefiting both consumers and building owners.

The Critical Role of Heat Meters

One key challenge for heat network operators is the lack of final customer meter reading in many residential schemes. Without meters, customers are not incentivised to control and use heat economically and this results in much higher bills and greenhouse gas emissions. We’ve seen firsthand the impact of introducing heat meters and consumption-based billing. When customers start paying based on their actual consumption, gas costs for the energy centre will drop by as much as 50%. This highlights the importance of metering a consumption-based billing, not just for regulatory compliance but also for creating fairer and more efficient energy usage.

Unlocking Funding to Improve Existing Heat Networks

Addressing the inefficiencies of existing residential schemes is crucial. The Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) funding initiative is designed to help building owners optimise their networks:

  • 100% grant funding is available for surveys and assessments of underperforming networks.
  • 50% capital funding is available for improvement works, allowing upgrades to be implemented at a reduced cost.

By leveraging this funding, building owners can improve efficiency, reduce costs, enhance the reliability of their heat networks and improve customer experience. Switch2 has supported clients secure substantial HNES funding, turning inefficient networks into cost-effective and sustainable solutions.

Accessing HNES Funding

Applications for Round 9 are open and will close on 28 March 2025. With the deadline fast approaching, now is the time for building owners to assess their networks and secure funding for essential improvements.
