At Switch2, we recognise the critical role future generations play in shaping a sustainable world, which is why we proudly sponsored the Sustainability Award at the Young Enterprise Regional Finals. Partnering with Young Enterprise, the UK’s leading youth enterprise charity, demonstrates our ongoing commitment to highlight sustainable initiatives and support the next generation.

Cathy Olphin, Sustainability Manager, had the pleasure of representing Switch2 as a guest judge and presented the Sustainability Award. Reflecting on her experience she shared her thoughts with us.

“Attending the Young Enterprise Regional Finals was such a fantastic opportunity. It was great to be able to engage with students, giving them the encouragement they need to build on their entrepreneurial instincts and pursue avenues they may not have considered before.

Students from a range of schools across the North-East had been developing their own companies since October. In a short space of time, they nominated a board of directors, developed a product to sell, formed a brand and all had delivered real profit. Contestants had to demonstrate how they worked as part of a team, how they considered sustainability in their products, and how they decided their business strategy. Through a series of panel interviews with judges, presentation sessions and a business fair, we were able to select an overall winner to go through to the national final alongside winners in specific categories.

To put the icing on the cake, I had the honour of presenting the Sustainability Award on behalf of Switch2, who had sponsored the initiative. The winning team, Plantables, had developed a range of products which they made from repurposed plastics which naturally biodegrade. While they were the winners, all teams demonstrated a real passion for the environment, and I never fail to be impressed by how readily the younger generations are engaging with climate issues.

As someone who has pushed for environmental awareness throughout my career, it was really inspiring to see what these young people are capable of. I’m very proud that Switch2 were able to support such a fantastic initiative by sponsoring the award and I’m excited to see what these bright young people do next!”
